My Dog Peed on My Mother’s Obituary

At a time when we were unaware, Rocco chose a plastic bin of mine on the floor to lift his leg over and urinate on. He is a well trained dog and this was unexpected–so unexpected, he kept his secret for what might have been an entire day or two. The bin was one of several in a plastic storage unit that contained every note, card, letter, photo, and sentimental piece of paper (or pipecleaner) I had saved since I was in the third grade. So Rocco chose to not only urinate inside the house, he selected the only spot that could desicrate my emotional well being. (Other than my blankies). At…

My Birthday, Halloween, & Scan Results

(This is a long overdue post that sat in my draft folder for over a month! Yikes!) For me, October was a blur of changing leaves and trying medications. I am really proud to say that I worked hard at getting healthier and by now, December, I am stable on some fantastic drugs (the disolve tab Lamichtal is pretty rad!) and feeling very stable, with a greater clarity of mind and ability to experience joy again. Just in time for the magical holiday season, so I truly could not feel more grateful. I am a busy worker bee with 4 jobs (more about that later!) and Raine continues to…

Two Months in Photos: Celebrations and Growth 2/13-4/13

Oregon’s spring came generously early this year. I couldn’t help but feel it was meant for us. The last two months have been full of struggle and change, so warm air, full sun, and colorful blooms as early as February were like stars in a deep, dark night sky guiding me along, promising some kind of hope. We are navigating our way and trying to embrace what is new and different. We celebrated Dan’s first scan post platinum chemotherapy treatments (the scan that showed the tumors have all died or stopped growth) as big as we could: we took naps in a luxurious hotel bed in downtown Portland. Haha! That…

    Our Wedding Vow Renewal Ceremony

There was a beautiful opportunity that opened up for us to renew our wedding vows on Valentine’s Day. In three weeks, I planned a small ceremony for us with our siblings, Doug and Rachel, and enlisted a few friends and community members to help us put it together at the last minute (on a shoestring budget). It all fell together like clouds parting to let a generous slice of sunshine through–and that warmth covered us so that we felt rejuvenated as a couple. It was utterly luxurious to dress up, shamelessly invoke romance, and focus entirely upon our love and our solemn vows to one another. You can read more about leading…

Medical Update: The Left Lung + Platinum Chemotherapy

Let me do my very best attempt to bring you up-to-date with Dan’s health. After the last CT scan, we did in fact proceed with two more platinum chemotherapy infusions (pemetrexed, ruxolitinib, and cisplatin) -rounds 5 & 6. After round 5, he was bed ridden for a week. His taste buds and other fast growing cells continued to struggle at the assault and he lost his tolerance for more food–cheese, garlic & onions, potatoes, for example. I tried not to worry as I woke him periodically for his meds, water or juice, and small bits of food. It was difficult to get him to eat much at all. One night I woke him and he…

    Two Weeks in Photos 11/11 – 11/25

Look at these adorable nuggets! Raine had ten days with his cousins, Logan and Lexi, and major fun was had by all. They went to an indoor play center, played at our house, swam at their hotel, and played at the park. These photos were taken the afternoon that we got a package in the mail with handmade Ninja Turtle stocking caps by Pat LaPorte, the mother of one of Dan’s childhood friends, Ed Kulzer. Raine was beside himself with excitement at getting a package in the mail (will he ever understand that most families/kids don’t get so many packages!?) And so Logan and Lexi were SO excited for…

    About Us

Outside Providence Sherwood, Dan’s family practice office.  Less than 10 days ago, my sister set up a GoFundMe fundraising account in our names. I also used GoFundMe a year ago to raise funds to help my parents after the tornado in Washington, IL. I had never used a web site like that and was stunned at how easy it was to create and how quickly and generously people gave. We raised a significant amount in online & offline donations to help my parents recover and rebuild from the tornado as well as maintain medical needs for my mom. I never dreamed that Dan and I would need a fundraising site…

    One Week In Photos 9/23 – 9/30

Dan’s hospital bed saw a lot of action: Cuddling, napping, games, crying, nose bleeds, sleeping (yes, he and I squeezed ourselves together in it one night!) vital checks, eating, and lots of phone conversations. One of the requirements for him to be discharged was the nurse teaching me how to give him his Lovenox injections. They had me practice on an orange because I missed his early morning shot. The nurses kept warning me that he has tough skin so I really came at him the first time I did it. LOL. Breakfast back at home. The usual at Carlton Coffee Company.  The wall in our kitchen where I…
